How and Why to Adopt an Alkaline Diet

It has become apparent to me after the last few months that the vast majority of people feel that their lack of energy, weight gain and declining overall health is just part of the aging process. The mentality sounds a little like this:
“ Jess, I have put on 10 kilos, but I am 49 years old! I am menopausal. So that’s normal right?”
“ My libido has dropped but I am at that age, so that’s normal right?”
“ I have aches and pain. I am exhausted!! I have no energy to cook dinner. I work full time and I am a mother, so of course I have low energy, normal? ”
“ I wake up so anxious!!! But every one does right. That’s just life?”
“ I am just exhausted, all day, everyday. But that is normal?”
The above are common, but they are NOT normal.
I believe an alkaline body is a healthy body. I believe an acidic body is a toxic body.
If you often feel tired and flat, it’s a safe bet that you are overly acidic. The simple fact is, most people are. You need to counter acidity with alkaline foods as soon as possible. (read on).
It is amazing to see how GOOD people begin to feel when they learn to incorporate a more alkaline diet.
A quick understanding of what alkaline means:
I am guessing the last time you heard the terms ‘acid’ and ‘alkaline’ was in your high school chemistry class. Little do you know that the balance of alkalinity and acidity in our bodies is so important in nutrition and the key to fighting premature aging and unwanted weight gain.
The acid-alkaline balance of our bodies is crucial to our overall health. Our bodies are constantly working hard to maintain an ideal pH level.
On the 0-14 pH scale, 7 is neutral, any pH above is alkaline and below 7 is acidic. Our blood should be slightly alkaline; at 7.365 pH- this is a healthy state.
An acidic body HATES to absorb vitamins, minerals (such as calcium, potassium and magnesium- essential beautifying and detoxing minerals) and other nutrients as it is starved of oxygen and it reduces our ability to repair cells. Diseases and ill health LOVE an acidic environment. When our bodies are alkaline it will heal better, be more oxygenated and help you reverse and prevent disease.
Our body has developed complex mechanisms to ensure that this balance is maintained. However due to age, stressful lifestyles and poor eating habits our bodies struggle to buffer our acidic lifestyles. The problem is, on a whole, the average western diet is acid-producing, and when acidic wastes accumulate, they can cause organs to malfunction and break down.
So…Why is this?
With our modern lifestyle being so busy, time poor and stressful we often opt for the ‘easier’, more convenient choice when it comes to feeding ourselves. Unfortunately the consumption of these quick options such as bread (at breakfast lunch and dinner may I mention), soft drinks, alcohol, coffee, takeout’s, sugar, processed and packaged foods is the main reason that we become over acidic.
Quite obviously, like most things, the acid-alkali balance depends to a large extent what we put into our mouths. Foods will either leave an alkaline or acidic residue in the body.
Broad examples:
Alkaline foods (you will see a more comprehensive list below) but for now think: your green, yellow and red vegies and fresh, ripe fruits. Learn to love your greens. SPROUTS especially 🙂
Acidic foods- meat, processed foods, fried foods, cheese, refined sugar, refined grains, coffee, tea, alcohol.
Truth is, majority of people consume nowhere near the optimal requirement of fruits and vegies. So the body fluids become acidic.

How will a balanced pH (an alkaline body) benefit you?
·      Promotes healthy body weight- I cannot empathize this enough.
·      May help prevent and treat diabetes
·      Protects against premature ageing
·      Promotes energy
·      Promote digestive health and immunity
·      Promotes better digestion
How to incorporate a more alkaline diet:
We know what is good for us. Your mum and dad told you when you were just a little child “eat your veggies”…  and the same still applies.
·      DRINK WATER- 2-3 liters a day
·      Limit or avoid coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks.
·      Avoid preservatives, additive and food coloring – they are toxic.
·      Have your vegies ready to eat…and lots of them!!!!
·      Chuck in a green drink into your diet whenever you can
Common mistake: that acid fruits are acid forming (like our lovely lemon). They are not, they are actually alkali-forming once they enter the body. Our bodies get rid of the acid component of the acidic fruit via oxidation (a process I wont go into here and now)-After this process, what is left is the alkaline minerals which makes the body fluid more alkaline.
How to test your pH? Easy PEEsy.
Using a simple pH kit that contains litmus paper that you can get from your local pharmacy. Bad news is: You have to pee on this paper.. But a really easy way to keep track of your body pH.
The best time to test your pH is on your second pee of the day, before meals or at least one or two hours after eating.

Alkalizing Diet Chart:

We need to adopt and adhere to an acid reducing lifestyle to achieve the correct balance. This is done by consuming alkalizing foods and drinks, while eliminating acidifying foods and drinks from the diet. In general, if an alkaline diet is recommended, use these guidelines for an alkalarian lifestyle based on a mainly vegetable diet:

Sample alkaline foods to comprise most (75-80%) of your diet. Eat salads, fresh vegetables, healthy nuts and oils, and plenty of raw foods. Drink at least 2-3 liters of clean, pure water daily.
Brussels Sprouts
Grasses (eg wheat, barley)
Green Beans
Watermelon (neutral)
Fats & Oils
Borage oil
Evening Primrose oil
Hemp oil
Olive &
Oil Blends
Seeds, Nuts, Grains
Buckwheat Groats
Sprouts/sprouted seeds fresh & as pastes: soy, alfalfa, mung bean, wheat, little radish, chickpea, broccoli, hummus, tahini
‘Green Drinks’
Fresh vegetable juice
Pure water (distilled, reverse osmosis, ionized)
Lemon water (pure water + fresh lemon or lime).
Herbal Tea
Vegetable broth
Non-sweetened Soy Milk
Almond Milk
Sample acid-forming foods to comprise the remainder (20-25%) of your diet. Avoid fatty meats, dairy, cheese, sweets & candy, chocolates, alcohol and tobacco.  Beware of hidden content of packaged foods and microwaved meals.  Don’t overcook meals – this removes all of the nutrition!
Crustaceans & other seafood (apart from occasional oily fish such as salmon)
All fruits not listed in the alkaline table.
