We’ve all heard the saying – an apple a day keeps the doctor away – but how true is this old adage?

Answer? Very!

In fact, there are several reasons why apples are one of the most cultured and consumed fruits in the world.

Apples are packed full of important nutrients, including Vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, dietary fibre, and minerals, such as calcium, potassium and phosphorus.

Did you know that eating apples is a great way to boost immune systems, and detoxify the liver? In fact, red apples contain the antioxidant ‘quercetin’, which can assist in strengthening your immune system, especially when under stress.

Tummy troubles? Apples can help! Digesting fibre can assist the extraction of water from your colon to keep you regular, or absorb extra fluid from your stool to slow down your bowls.

Whilst I would not suggest ditching your toothbrush – did you know that munching on apples acts as a natural teeth whitener? Chewing on apples stimulates saliva production, effectively fighting off bacteria and reducing tooth decay.

Looking to shed some kilos? Apples are low in sodium, calories, and fat, and high in soluble fibre. Whilst fibre helps keep you fuller for longer, low-sodium foods prevent water retention and excess water weight – perfect for weight loss!

As a wholesome snack, I love chopped apple with organic Greek yoghurt and a handful of almonds. Apples can also be enjoyed as a sweet addition to your lunchtime salad, or as a healthy dessert option. Next time that sweet tooth calls – try out my simple, nutritious apple crumble!
