Healthy Highlight: Berries!

Whether blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or gogi berries…..I love berries!

Berries of all kind are incredibly nutritious, and are some of my favourite fruit additions to any dish – sweet or savoury. Berries are not only amazing low GI fruits, they also assist optimal liver function. In fact, adding half a cup of berries (one serving size) each day to your diet has countless nutritional benefits!

Blueberries are very high in antioxidants, which aids cardio vascular health and prevents the clogging of blood vessels. Interestingly, blueberries are also great for your vision! Anthocyanins found in blueberries protects the retina from potential oxygen AND sunlight damage.

Whilst goji berries have only recently become known in Western countries, these berries have been used for centuries in countries such as China (for both nutritional and medicinal purposes!). Goji berries are also packed with protein, fibre, minerals and Vitamin C! Goji berries are most commonly bought in dried form, and cant be added to salads or sweet treats, and are a great addition to your morning oats/porridge.

Like goji berries, strawberries are super high in Vitamin C. Looking for a simple face mask? Mash strawberries together and apply to your skin! Research into the nutritional value of strawberries point to numerous health benefits including fighting against inflammation, ageing and neurological diseases.

Interestingly – raspberries can be found in red, purple, gold and even black! The reason raspberries are the most delicate of the berries is due to their hollow centre. They are also high in Vitamin C, folate and potassium.
