JSHealth Mornings: Before and After

A few years ago, I don’t know that I could have called myself a morning person. But once I started paying closer attention to my body’s needs and my overall health, an incredible thing happened: my mornings and attitude toward the day completely transformed!

Here is a snap of what my mornings looked like before I started healing my body:

  • Wake up tired and immediately check my (multiple) inboxes. Face glued to phone. I would always feel pangs of anxiety in my stomach while doing this.
  • I felt utterly exhausted. Exercise was the last thing I felt like doing – but I would still push my body and attempt a hard, badass exercise routine like running for an hour or going to the gym to take a class I hated.
  • I would make myself a low calorie, fad diet breakfast – usually egg whites and black coffee with artificial sweetener. Or maybe some low calorie sweetened yoghurt if I was feeling adventurous. How boring and sad.
  • I would have silent thoughts like “this is too hard.” “I have no passion.” “Jess, you’re not good at anything.” “Why do you always get picked on?” “When will it be my turn?” “You should be better at life.”

And here is a snap of how I start my day now. This is a typical morning in the life of JSHealth:

6:30am: Upon waking, I make a conscious effort to not look at my phone or email until AFTER my morning routine is complete.

6:35am: I meditate for ten minutes. This usually involves me saying thanks and manifesting a good life. I’ll share more about this in a future blog post, because it’s really done incredible things!

6:45am: I prepare and drink a cup of warm lemon water – a typical nutritionist!

7:00am: Time to get moving! I’ve found I love to work out before my day begins as I don’t enjoy exercising in the afternoon as much. It’s such a great time to get out in the fresh air and clear your mind. And you can’t beat the extra hit of endorphins! I usually take a walk outside, go to yoga or Pilates, or take a barre class because these are activities I really enjoy – but I also embrace 2 to 3 days of rest each week.

7:30am: Coffee break! Typically I have 1 coffee a day that I savor and just adore. I normally have a piccolo with full cream milk. If I’m taking a brief break from dairy, I will have an almond milk piccolo.

8:00am: Breakfast time. I usually prepare a healthy breakfast at home – either eggs with avocado, a protein smoothie, or on a cold day, I love a bowl of porridge topped with homemade granola and Greek yoghurt. When I’m feeling creative, I’ll work on a new breakfast recipe! I’ve put all of my favourite recipes in my new book, The Healthy Life.

9:00am: With my morning routine complete, I then switch on and begin working with the JSHealth team. This is also when I start responding to texts and emails. Taking that time in the morning is such a gift. It allows me to fully focus on my work and responsibilities because I’ve taken care of myself too.

I realize that everyone has a different routine and schedule, but my point is that making yourself a priority makes an incredible difference in the way you greet the rest of the day. Find what energizes you!
