Meet Ashley…

Age:  39

Occupation:  Registered Dietitian

Tell us a little about who you are, what you do, how you got here:

I try to be an enable of healthier lives by empowering people through education to achieve their personal health goals. I arrived here on a road that included working in grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, global advertising agency with a global food company client, non-profit public education work and then integrative medicine work. All of this has taught me that despite good nutrition being a very simple thing, we’ve made it a complicated mess for most, and it’s time to change that!

What does ‘health’ mean to you?

A dynamic state where your body is working efficiently and effectively to support itself well.

How do you manage to stay so fit and healthy, please share with us your dietary philosophy/secrets:

I laugh…a lot… and I consume copious amounts of organic vegetables. I walk my talk – I am a Qualitarian and it’s what I want everyone to be because at the end of the day the body works best when it recognizes what it’s getting – and those are the “better” quality choices. There is no room for perfection in nutrition or health, but there’s always a better and a less good choice. Be a Qualitarian – choose better quality…oh and the other thing, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t! That’s SO not helpful or healthful

What brings balance to your life?

I have recognized the cues (most of the time) when I go a little too far one way, so I bring myself back at those times with different things – it could be needing to work less and even party it up a little or it could be saying no and getting to bed earlier. Or it could be an infrared sauna and an organic greens juice

Your favorite healthy recreational activity?

All recreational activities are healthy…and my favorite is when I do something that makes me smile or laugh in that moment. It typically includes my dog, Rerun.

Who is your greatest health inspiration?

So I don’t believe in “-est’s” …it’s kind of like perfect – no room for that. But I have a few clients that inspire me weekly, I am grateful for the life and health insights that doctors like Dr Weil, Dr Soram Khalsa, Dr Oz have given me; I am totally in awe of several professional athletes, and I have great admiration for several spirit leaders. I get inspiration everyday, everywhere…

Where is your favorite place on earth?

When I am in my happy space – laughing and present – it’s not a location, it’s a state but it’s often enabled by locations like nature – woods, rivers, mountains, beaches

What is your favorite healthy meal/snack?

Oh there is no way I can pick a favorite child…but I am known to have a cruciferous crush.

What is your favorite healthy neighborhood restaurant?

Depends on where I am but in Venice I love Axe, Shima, Oscar’s, Akasha, Café Gratitude…uh oh, I could go on and on…we are a food town

What is next on the cards for you?

I discover that daily now that I have the cool John Holland tarot card app – my favorite holiday gift to myself ($9.99).

 Hemp Pesto

hemp pesto

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp brazil nuts
  • 3 tbsp Hemp hearts
  • 2 1/2 cups fresh basil
  • 1/4 cup Hemp oil
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • salt & pepper to taste

Method:

Mix all the ingredients in a food processor.

Keeps up to 5 days in the fridge.  Serve crackers, pita chips, for a delicious and healthy appetizer.

When I started my studies, I was drinking lots of coffee and I was eaten the wrong foods, and feel bad about it, I wasn't at my best. So I had done some research on the net but at first I didn't found advices that are for me, and then I found your blog. It was exactly what I was looking for, good advices and healthy recipes. Now I'm following your advices on rest more, and snacks between meals and prep the meals and take time for myself to reconnect with my body and let go my anxiety, etc, and I have a more balanced life and have a new relationship with food thanks to you.

I bought your book and it's honestly the best book I have ever bought. I suffer from IBS and anxiety. I searched for help and tips through the Internet and found Jessica Sepel.
