Welcome to The Healed Life! I’m thrilled to be launching a new interview series featuring strong, inspiring women who are living their best lives through vibrant health and wellness. It’s exciting to kick it all off with a gorgeous young woman I’ve had the pleasure to watch blossom from a new health coach to a wise and worldly group leader. Amelia Harvey is at the helm of The Soul Sister Sessions, and she’s here sharing more about her journey and hopes for her wellness tribe. Thank you for being part of The Healed Life, Amelia!

Tell us a little about who you are and how you got here:

Hi! I’m Amelia. I’m a sister, girlfriend, friend, daughter, and granddaughter. I have a sausage dog called Alfie and a cat called Benji. I love travelling, creating, and being outdoors. I’m a total wellness nerd and I love all things spirituality – I spent 3 months last year living in Ubud, Bali which is pretty much heaven on earth for someone like me! Now I live in Perth – I was born here but I spent 7 years living in Canberra when I was in high school.

For ‘work’ (if you can call it that!) I’m a Health and Life Coach. I run workshops and my group coaching programs, The Soul Sister Sessions, that empower women to live a happy and healthy life with ease and flow – no discipline, willpower, or restriction necessary! (Really!) I also coach women from all over the world one-on-one via Skype. I arrived at coaching after finishing my Honours degree in Psychology and feeling like I wanted to help people on an even deeper level. I considered medicine but I was drawn to coaching as it enabled me to incorporate psychology, nutrition, and spirituality into my work. In my experience, being healthy and happy is easy when I look after myself my body, mind, and spirit. 

What is your favourite recipe when you need to feel truly nourished?

I can’t go past a good smoothie – whenever I travel I come home craving healthy smoothies and steamed veggies! I adore Jess’ smoothies and at the moment I’m loving my berry and cucumber smoothie creation:

Berry and Cucumber Smoothie

  • 1 cup organic frozen blueberries
  • 1 lebanese cucumber, chopped
  • 1/2 a lime, chopped
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 tbsp organic coconut flakes
  • 2 cups organic coconut water
  • Handful of mint leaves

Everything goes into the blender and I drink it straight away. So good!

Can you share a little about your history with food and your body?

Several years ago I had a terrible relationship with food and my body. I was constantly trying different diets and went to drastic measures to lose weight – and none of them worked. I would binge eat, hate myself, and start another diet only to fall off the wagon and start the whole cycle again. It was horrible! I decided that there had to be a better way so I stopped dieting and started eating what my body wanted and just like that, the weight came off. I was also a much happier and nicer person. I devoured a heap of books and blogs about overcoming emotional eating and creating a healthy relationship with food. I learnt to trust my body to tell me what to eat and what beliefs and blocks were stopping me from eating in a nourishing way.

What helped heal your relationship with food and your body?

Realizing the answers to my issues with emotional and binge eating didn’t lie in another diet or losing 5 kilos! When I stopped dieting and restricting and I started to look more deeply at my psychological and spiritual relationships to food, letting go of unhealthy habits became easy. By getting in touch with my intuition, becoming more mindful, and learning to listen to my body, food became a source of nourishment instead of a way to control my body. It’s also been incredibly healing for me to guide other women out of their own unhappy relationships with food and their bodies.

What is the most rewarding part of living The Healed Life?

Living a healed life, to me, is all about having a great toolkit for dealing with stress, overwhelm, anxiety, and sadness. It’s about healing moment by moment with the choices I make – the food to eat, the work I do, the thoughts I engage with, the connection I have to my intuition and heart. The most rewarding part of living the healed life is that it means I stay present to really enjoy every moment and that I get to share this toolkit with my groups and clients. Seeing them empowered to feel and live how they want to makes me so happy!

What is the number one piece of advice you would give to someone healing?

Look at how you can heal not just physically but emotionally, spiritually and energetically as well and get support to do that. Find a counselor or coach, make an appointment for kinesiology or reiki and do chakra meditations. Healing will happen effortlessly as you connect to these deeper levels of yourself.

When it comes to body image, what do you hope for the next generation of young women?

I hope that we stop accepting the definition of ‘attractive’ or ‘sexy’ that we are fed by the media – not just young women but (maybe more importantly) young men as well. I hope the next generation has enough awareness to make their own decisions about what they find beautiful and to see that being comfortable in your skin isn’t about looking a certain way on the outside but feeling a certain way on the inside.

Do you have a daily mantra?

Feel good, have fun, and stay present.

What is your favourite way to “switchoff”?

Switching off was something I had to learn to do pretty quickly after I started my business – in the early days it would consume my mind all day and night! Stepping away from technology at a certain time of night has become a really important part of my life.

To switch off my mental chatter I love to draw, paint, and create my own body and cleaning products with natural ingredients and essential oils, or get creative in the kitchen. I love losing myself in anything creative!

I also find a dip in the ocean is incredible for clearing my mind – I feel like I literally wash away all my stress. Afterwards I love to sit on the beach and meditate – another way I switch off. Weekends away and holidays without my laptop always do the trick too!

What is the most empowering thing you do to love yourself?

Last year I invested in working with a coach and I recently had a session with a psychic. Both were incredibly empowering experiences that helped me find more clarity and connection to myself. They helped me trust that where I am is where I’m meant to be and that I have all the answers to my questions and problems inside me already. I am constantly reminding myself to question my path and why I do what I do and that I am always empowered to choose how I feel, think, and act.

What are you manifesting next?

I’ve just opened up more space in my calendar for new one-on-one clients and I recently had a really exciting workshop in Perth. Online, I’m working on a beautiful new website and I’m creating an online version of some of The Soul Sister Sessions topics for ladies living outside of Perth. I’m also manifesting a great new office in our amazing new home, speaking opportunities and lots of love, creativity and adventure for the rest of 2015 (and beyond!).

I'm writing this email because I wanted to tell you how much I love your blog and how you really helped me in my health journey. Thank you for sharing all your advices and experiences.

When I started my studies, I was drinking lots of coffee and I was eaten the wrong foods, and feel bad about it, I wasn't at my best. So I had done some research on the net but at first I didn't found advices that are for me, and then I found your blog. It was exactly what I was looking for, good advices and healthy recipes. Now I'm following your advices on rest more, and snacks between meals and prep the meals and take time for myself to reconnect with my body and let go my anxiety, etc, and I have a more balanced life and have a new relationship with food thanks to you.

I bought your book and it's honestly the best book I have ever bought. I suffer from IBS and anxiety. I searched for help and tips through the Internet and found Jessica Sepel. This is seriously not exaggerated, but she was the reason why I have dared myself to eat again, to have snacks in between, to nourish my body.
