With almost a million followers on Instagram, it’s obvious we’re not the only ones who are massive fans of Stephanie Smith (better known as Steph Claire Smith). She’s a gorgeous Aussie model, currently studying personal training and has just launched a website called Keep it Cleaner with best friend, Laura Henshaw, to encourage young girls and women to incorporate healthy habits – and some delicious looking food (we’re obsessed with the Matilda Mud Cake) – into their lives. Steph shares with us her healthy and balanced ‘Day on a Plate’, along with some inspirational words of advice for those starting up their health journey…

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do.

I am a full time model, based in Melbourne Australia for the most part. I am also an author of a healthy eating ebook called ‘Keep It Clean’ and my business partner and I recently launched a website called Keep it Cleaner to expand on that. I have developed quite a social media following on Instagram and Snapchat, and have absolutely loved having younger girls or women look to me as some sort of healthy inspiration. I try and keep to a healthy routine both with my diet and exercise, and I’m happiest that way.

  1. What was the ‘uh ha’ moment that inspired you to get in to health and wellbeing?

When I was younger I was quite lucky with my fast metabolism, but that slowed down as soon as I hit 18, which was also when I started modelling. Modelling was probably the first thing that got me eating better and exercising more, just because you’ve got to feel good about yourself to perform well in front of a camera. Just like everyone who first starts exercising and eating better, at first I wasn’t into it… but after a while I noticed not only a change in my body, but a change in my skin, my mood, and my energy levels. I still treat myself and I’m not too strict on myself… but I definitely prefer the feeling I get after eating well, then after eating something bad.

  1. Talk us through a typical day in your life…

I’ll explain a day off, because my modeling jobs are ALWAYS different… different locations, different call times, different catering…

First off, Josh (my boyfriend) leaves the house just after 6am, more often than not I fall back to sleep once he leaves. I’ll always set my alarm to 8:30 though, even if i have nothing to wake up for… I just don’t like to waste the day in bed, and like to keep my body clock on point. First things first, I let my dog Ari outside for a wee. Then it’s breakfast time. I NEVER skip breakfast… even if I’m running late to something, I will make a quick smoothie or grab a banana and some nuts before I run out the door. I’ve got quite a sweet tooth first thing in the morning, so I usually opt for a smoothie, an acai bowl, a quinoa or spelt porridge with berries or yoghurt, fruit and nuts.

If the weathers good I’ll go for a long walk with Ari, usually 7-10km. I always make the most of my days off… so I’ll study (I’m studying online personal training atm) or I’ll write up a new blog for my website, and I will schedule time for a workout.

Sometimes when work gets hectic my exercise routine suffers, so I like to make sure that on my days off I work out. I usually would do a class at KX Pilates, or I’m a member at Good Life gyms, so I’d go there instead.

Lunchtime on a day off usually means catching up with a friend or having a meeting over some smashed avo on toast at a cafe. I also opt for a brekkie salad sometimes… I absolutely love poached eggs on a salad. If I get peckish in the afternoon before dinner then my snacks of choice are; a baked good from my ebook or website, a piece of fruit, peanut butter on a spelt or rice cracker, a smoothie or 1-2 hard boiled eggs.

Dinnertime is always my favourite time of the day. To me there is something very therapeutic about cooking dinner, particularly when I’m cooking for Josh, I just love trying new dishes out on him! He’s a great critic. Our most regular dinners would be; a healthy pasta dish, chicken stir fry with heaps of veggies and brown rice, roast chicken with veggies or a salad of some sort.

I always finish off the day with a piece of dark chocolate … sometimes more than one hehe… and a peppermint tea!

  1. Three foods you can’t live without?

Meat, brown rice and fruit.

  1. What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?

A home made muesli bar, or some nuts or fruit.

  1. … And any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?

Stick to it. It sucks at first, but once you’re in a routine, and you see how it makes you feel, you won’t understand how you ever lived without it.
