Day on a Plate: Lee Holmes

Healthy Q&A's

We’re so thrilled to be talking with Lee Holmes again – a huge wellness and foodie inspiration here in Sydney. Lee is a certified Health Coach, a Hatha Yoga teacher, wholefoods chef, founder of the website Supercharged Food and author of six amazing books. Her approach to supporting gut health through wholefood and knowledge on all things wellness is something to aspire to. You can find Lee blogging at Read on to hear some of Lee’s pearls of wisdom and Day on a Plate…

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do:

I am a holistic nutritionist, yoga teacher and wholefoods chef, and author of six books including Supercharged Food: Eat Your Way to Health and Heal Your Gut. On my blog I  encourage S.O.L.E food: sustainable, organic, local and ethical and feature delicious recipes. One of my goals is to help people eat healthier and I give them menu planning ideas to make it easy for them to create and enjoy a satisfying, wholesome and nourishing diet.

2. What was the ‘uh ha’ moment that inspired you to get in to health and wellbeing?

The Supercharged blog began roughly 6 years ago when I found myself in hospital and basically unable to function properly. I had gotten to the point of being so sick that I just couldn’t get out of bed anymore. I was absolutely exhausted all the time, I thought I had chronic fatigue but I tried to push through it, like many women do, we think we’re invincible!

In hospital I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease and they put me on a cocktail of drugs; immuno suppressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-cancer drugs and a lot of steroids. The drugs weren’t working; in fact they were making me feel worse, so I looked to food and nutrition for answers.

3. Talk us through a typical day in your life

First thing when I wake up, I do an hour of creative writing as I find my mind works better first thing in the morning. I then practise yoga or go for a walk around Centennial Park as it’s right next to my home. After yoga or my walk, I have a shower and get ready for breakfast which is usually some kind of smoothie or granola.

I tend to have a light breakfast and not eat until lunch time because it gives my body the chance to rest longer. That’s what I do but it’s not for everyone, everyone is different.

Then I get started on my work for the day. Every day is different, which I really thrive on. Sometimes I’m writing content for my website, or at the moment I’m putting the finishing touches on a new online program to complement my Heal Your Gut 4 week Program.

For lunch I’ll usually have some left over’s from the night before or some stir fried veg, salad or fish. I like to include some fresh herbs to any dish I create from my herb wall that sits in my garden. I love how the flavours can really enliven any dish, even last night’s leftovers! I like to enjoy this in my garden in the sunshine for a daily dose of Vitamin D.

It’s back to work for the afternoon which might involve cooking, writing or testing recipes for my new cookbook or shooting video content that I put on my YouTube channel. I love my work so the afternoon speeds by.

For dinner I have something like a stir fry or roast or curry and I always have it with vegetables.  I always try and eat dinner before 7 pm.

I might snuggle up on the couch with my husband or daughter for a movie night or it could be just me and a good book winding down for the evening.

4. Three foods you can’t live without?

  • Greens (can I group them together? I couldn’t possibly just choose one! 😉
  • My Heal Your Gut Powder which I add to smoothies, soups and just on it’s own with water sometimes too!
  • I love using turmeric too in my drinks and dishes.

5. What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?
I love my seanuts with lime, sardines and almonds.

6. Any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?

I would say start slow. You just need to take one step at a time, be it increasing your water intake, or cutting back on the amount of processed foods you purchase to learning to cook a few simple, nutritious dishes from fresh, seasonal ingredients. If you just take it a step at the time, these things will become integrated into your daily lifestyle and you will feel all the better for it.
