Meet Jo, the founder of natural cosmetics company, Orli. At JSHealth we absolutely adore Jo’s mission to empower women of all ages to love their own beauty – where true beauty is, in her words, ‘health, intelligence and kindness’. Her passion for organic living (ORLI… get it?) inspired the creation of Orli, an ethical beauty hub and carefully curated collection of natural brands. Read on to find out the beautiful nourishing meals Jo eats in a day…

 

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do.

 

I am the founder of the online natural beauty company; Orli (Organic Living)

I am of Malaysian Chinese heritage and come from a family that’s always been obsessed with health, education and food! My interest in natural health is a product of my family and growing up in a multicultural landscape that is modern yet rich in traditional culture, food and remedies.

Orli is a merger of my professional background in accounting together with my passion for natural health and beauty.

 

 

  1. What was the ‘uh ha’ moment that inspired you to start Orli Organics?

 

I have always been a proponent of feeding my family chemical free, grass fed and organic food. After a series of skin flare-ups, I began to do some research into the world of skin care.

It became apparent that our skin ‘eats’ and if I was serious about clean living, I had to look at BOTH food AND what I was lathering on my skin.

Making the transition to natural cosmetics wasn’t as straightforward as I had imagined. I came across too many products that used natural and organic as mere marketing terms. Armed with my disenchantment with’ green washing’, I became determined to find 100% natural and effective products.

Like a treasure hunt, I eventually found real natural gems that had amazing results on my skin. I figured if I had already done the hard work and research, why not share my findings to make it easier for everyone to purchase and use truly safe and natural personal care products? That’s how Orli was born.

 

  1. What sets Orli Organics apart from all other products?

 

Orli prides itself on being small and niche. I personally research every ingredient and test every single product. Think of it as a very selective curation of beautiful natural brands.

The shopping experience is not about overwhelming customers with quantity but to focus on a limited but top quality and well-researched range. I want to make shopping for natural skincare as simple as possible.

Our preference is to support small batch suppliers that share our vision for creating a safer, kinder and greener planet. We believe that enterprise should be socially responsible and we donate 10% of all full priced sales to good causes. We are embarking on the next phase of the journey where we are beginning to introduce Orli’s own organic multifunctional blends.

All our orders are fulfilled using recyclable biodegradable packaging and we believe that any order, big or small, should arrive with beautiful wrapping.

Our philosophy is centered on advocating for a cleaner, kinder planet and beauty that’s healthy and intelligent. We are not about anti-ageing but empowering women to be comfortable and proud of their own unique beauty regardless of their age, weight and skin colour. At Orli, beauty is about striving for better health and mindfulness.

 

  1. Talk us through a typical day in your life…

 

I’m usually up at 6am each day. I squeeze in a half hour run 3x a week and make sure I’m home by 6.30am to get my 3 boys ready for school.

My philosophy of food is based around unprocessed wholesome meals… Usually with lots of spices… And zero wastage. There is definitely a strong Asian influence in the meals that I cook. I am adventurous when it comes to food and mainly create my own dishes based on what I have in the fridge or pantry. I look to recipes for inspiration but hardly ever have the patience or tenacity to follow them to the T.

Breakfast during the week is admittedly slightly unconventional and always savoury… Usually broth with rice or fried rice with turmeric and spices… Mixed with the leftovers from the previous night’s dinner.

I love the coffee from my local café after school drop off and it’s usually a full fat latte. Throughout the day, I drink loads of herbal organic teas and matcha. One of my favourite drinks in winter is a glass of warm almond milk mixed with turmeric, ginger and a dash of honey. I usually froth this mixture using the coffee machine. This elixir really warms the body from the inside out.

It’s straight into work mode after the morning coffee as it’s important for me to get as much done as possible during school hours to allow me to be present for the kids when they get home. In between meals I snack on basic seasonal fruit like oranges, apples or kiwi.

Lunch is usually a salad or a stir-fry of vegetables with lots of spices thrown in. I love adding full fat organic yoghurt to my spicy savoury dishes.

For dinner, we usually eat meat/fish, a fresh salad and a cooked vegetable dish. A convenient mid-week dinner option is rice noodles, meat/egg in bone broth with seaweed and vegetables.

I love food and different tastes and I don’t believe in deprivation. Fresh food, in moderate quantities is basically my guide. I have no qualms confessing that my indulgent drink of choice is a good gin (without the sugary tonic). The spices and botanical infusions in different gin labels hold a lot of appeal and intrigue!

 

  1. Three foods you can’t live without?

 

Bone or chicken broth, spices, fresh crunchy vegetables.

 

  1. What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?

 

A can of sustainably caught tuna mixed with chillies and lime on a bed of rice plus half an avocado. Yum.

 

  1. … And any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?

 

There’s no time like right NOW to begin your relationship with health. Health starts when you say hello to nourishing fresh food and goodbye to fad diets and calorie counting. Read food labels and make sure they are free from corn syrup, cheap vegetable oils, ‘flavours’ and preservatives and low in added sweeteners. The best partner for your health journey is a home cooked meal. Prepare more dishes from home, from scratch using fresh ingredients.

 

Incorporate some exercise but find something that brings you JOY and RELAXATION. Exercise should never be dreadful. The key is to get your blood circulating and your body moving. Don’t use exercise purely as a means to burn fat or calories as you will burn out. As they say “you can never outrun a bad diet”.

 

Your health journey will last you a lifetime so set simple achievable goals and don’t get caught up with too many rules. Rules will ultimately be broken and unrealistic goals only results in the feeling of failure.

 

Broad guidelines work best like…eat fresh and exercise a little. Most importantly don’t ever put yourself down for eating that piece of cake or give up on exercise because you’ve missed a couple of classes. Simply “RESET” and start again.
