  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do.


I’m a nutritional biochemist, an author and speaker. I love writing books – I have written nine – and I am very grateful that I get to speak about health and nutrition, particularly women’s health, all over the world. With my background in research, I still love to do this and read avidly. I also grow food at home and love being in my garden.


  1. What was the ‘uh ha’ moment that inspired you to get in to health and wellbeing?


It’s funny because in a way I don’t feel like I consciously ‘chose’ this career path. All I knew as a youngster was that I’d write books. Writing has always been a passion. But having initially followed a very scientific career path with 14 years at university studying a Bachelor Health Science (Nutrition and Dietetics) with Honours and a PhD in biochemistry, it is a joy to couple that with the 18 years I’ve worked with people one-on-one, as a foundation for my three pillar approach to wellness: the biochemical, the nutritional and the emotional. I love the combination of the creativity I experience when I’m writing combined with also fulfilling the analytical research/scientific component of my work. Most importantly I believe my purpose is to help educate people about the importance of taking great care of themselves – so I’m very grateful I get to wake up every day and do this.


  1. Talk us through a typical day in your life…


In Summer I tend to get up with the sun and I begin each day with time by myself to do whatever I feel will nourish me. This can be anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. That might be walking, pilates, meditation, reading – facts or fiction – or simply sitting outside and soaking it up.


By now, I’ve had plenty of rainwater from my tank. Next it’s the Organic Daily Greens and Radiant Reds by Bio Blends (part of the food-based nutritional supplement range I created this year) mixed in water. A little later again it’s either warm water with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Later again, I’ll eat breakfast – there’s no set meal. I eat whatever I feel like which can be anything from an omelette to poached eggs, spinach and avocado or butter on dense gluten free bread made from pumpkin and brown rice. It’s all certified organic or home grown. I eat this at what ever time I feel hungry.


I tend to start work around 8.30/9am depending on where I am or what I’m working on. I have just finished the largest speaking tour I’ve ever conducted, so it’s really special to have my feet on the ground – and in the same place for a while.


I don’t snack. I’m just not hungry between meals. There are days when I eat twice a day as I eat a substantial amount of whole food fats which are highly satiating. I tend to have lunch anywhere from 1-4pm. I tend to have leftovers from dinner with additional greens, if I’m at home I will pick some greens and herbs from the garden, which I absolutely love. Or if I’m home I’ll make something from scratch. Plenty of vegies is always the base.


If I eat again, it’s simple. I love simple flavours complimented with herbs, lemon and olive oil. I also love using the recipes in my cookbooks (Real Food Chef and Real Food Kitchen). In the summer I tend to have a lot more fresh food, such as salads and in the winter more slow-cooked dishes, soups and so on. If I’m out on the road I always order a big bowl of steamed vegies and sometimes I’ll add other things to that. Or I’ll find a nourishing café which I am thrilled are increasing in numbers around the world.


Generally, I cannot wait to dive into my book so I tend to get to bed around 9pm to allow myself some time to read.

  1. What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?


It’s very rare that I’m hungry between meals. If I am I’d eat some macadamia nuts. Some of my lovely staff make the sweet foods from our cookbooks, particularly Sweet Food Story, which is so delightful of them.


  1. … And any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?


I hear so many women say they don’t have time to cook for themselves or don’t have time to add anything additional to their schedule. It is undeniable we have more on our plates and while I appreciate that many of us are juggling many different tasks and roles daily, there is nothing on this Earth that replaces the power of a nourishing way of eating. In my book Women’s Wellness Wisdom, I wrote about taking responsibility for our nourishment and so many women could benefit simply by prioritising their own health and wellbeing. Preparing real food may take more time, but it is time we have to allow for in our day. When we say “I don’t have time” for something, what we are essentially saying is “that is not a priority for me”. When we rephrase things in this way, it may help foster change. Sometimes, one of the best ways to change how we nourish ourselves is to explore our values and priorities. When I started my studies, I was drinking lots of coffee and I was eaten the wrong foods, and feel bad about it, I wasn't at my best.
